Review: MacRieve by Kresley Cole

In this pulse-pounding Immortals After Dark tale, #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole delves into the darkest mysteries and deepest passions of Clan MacRieve. . .

A Beast In Torment

Uilleam MacRieve believed he’d laid to rest the ghosts of his boyhood. But when a brutal torture revives those ancient agonies and destroys his Lykae instinct, the proud Scot craves the oblivion of death. Until he finds her—a young human so full of spirit and courage that she pulls him back from the brink.

A Beauty In Chains

Seized for the auction block, Chloe Todd is forced to enter a terrifying new world of monsters and lore as a bound slave. When offered up to creatures of the dark, she fears she won’t last the night. Until she’s claimed by him—a tormented immortal with heartbreaking eyes, whose touch sets her blood on fire.

A Full Moon On The Rise

With enemies circling, MacRieve spirits Chloe away to the isolated Highland keep of his youth. But once he takes her to his bed, his sensual mate becomes something more than human, evoking his savage past and testing his sanity. On the cusp of the full moon, can he conquer his worst nightmare to save Chloe . . . from himself?

** spoiler alert ** The book starts out with a flashback into Uilleam MacRieve’s past. His family is destroyed by a devious succubus. Uilleam, often referred to as MacRieve, and his twin Munro are orphaned at 13. MacRieve shoulders the guilt from that horrible night that changed their lives and kills any succubus that dares venture in his path.

Present day, Chloe Todd is a professional soccer player with dreams of going to the Olympics. However, she’s noticed her body has been going through some changes: her hearing and other senses have become heightened, she’s stronger, and has been losing her appetite and hardly sleeping. She confides in her father, Dustin Todd, about her concerns while he’s packing for another “business trip.”

Chloe’s father looks disappointed and can only offer solace in the form of a book, given before he hastily abandons her. It is The Book of Lore; a book describing creatures that are not human. Chloe is completely lost. Her father is gone, her body is changing and she hasn’t the first clue about what’s happening or what she’s becoming.

After weeks of no contact, Chloe hears movement in her father’s study. As she goes to check it out, she encounters a HUGE demon with horns. Chloe runs for the front door and as she steps out onto the welcome mat, she falls into nothingness, only to wake up bound in an RV with young girls signing Justin Bieber songs!
“The witches ignored her, turning up the stereo. She cringed when yet another Bieber song pumped away. Great, she’d been captured by fucking Beliebers.
They planned to sell her at auction? When “Beauty and a Beat” played for the fifth time, Chloe decided she was ready for the block.” pg 76
Next thing you know, Chloe is half-naked and blindfolded and tied to a pole on a stage being auctioned off. Because apparently, her father is also Commander Web; the evil man who ran the torture facility that captured and imprisoned many in the Lore. It seems Commander Web has gone AWOL and everyone in the Lore wants a piece of him. What better way to flush him out than to capture his daughter.

MacRieve has been struggling for centuries with the guilt of losing his and Munro’s parents. He’s also trying to recover from being experimented on after escaping the facility not long ago. MacRieve feels he came back wrong and longs for death…or revenge. When the twins find out there’s to be an auction for Daughter of Web, they jump at the chance to buy her, hoping to get the whereabouts of her father.

As MacRieve and Munro show up to the auction, MacRieve is overwhelmed with a distinct scent. His mate is here. As he scours the clearing for her, the auction begins. MacRieve reaches the stage and can’t believe his mate is Daughter of Webb! Fate is a cruel bitch in the Lore. Not only is MacRieve’s mate human, she’s also his enemy’s daughter…and about to be sold to the highest bidder. MacRieve’s beast is going berserk to claim his mate and as the auction concludes with his mate being sold to the Pravus, the evil Loreans, MacRieve will stop at nothing to save and protect his mate.

I absolutely LOVE Kresley Cole. Her Immortals After Dark series is one of the best around! This book proves it. You can’t go wrong with sexy Lykaes speaking in a Scottish brogue. MacRieve experiences every single emotion in this book. He is faced with his worst fears and having to put aside his prejudices and learns to trust his mate and make peace with himself.

The book also had me laughing out loud so many times. I love Kresley’s wicked sense of humor and it translates so well into the books. Chloe is a tough soccer player with an equally impressive trash talking mouth.
Rónan jogged up to her. “Your lip and cheek really look bad.”
She rolled her eyes. “Rónan, I’m fine. Now, why don’t you shove in a manpon and tug up your manties and PLAY SOCCER.” pgs 276-277
I also loved how Chloe adapted soccer metaphors when talking to herself and others, mainly MacRieve…
A flush spread over his chiseled cheekbones. “I’m keen for a rematch tonight.”
“Ha!” Your last attempt at-goal went way wide. Not even close. As a matter of fact, you got red-carded out of the game.”
With his smoldering gaze boring into hers, he grated, “I want—back—in.” pgs 348-349
The book is full of action, steamy mating sex and delicious Lykae who finds the courage to admit to his failures and triumph over grief.

I highly recommend MACRIEVE and the entire Immortals After Dark series!
