Review: Eternal Kiss of Darkness by Jeaniene Frost

An immortal war has been brewing in the darkness . . . And now one woman has stumbled into the shadows.

Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling should have just kept on walking. But her sense of duty refused to let her ignore the moans of pain coming from inside a warehouse just before dawn. Suddenly she finds herself in a world she's only imagined in her worst nightmares.

At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master vampire who thought he'd seen it all. Then Kira appears, this fearless, beautiful . . . human who braved death to rescue him. Though he burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life. Yet sending her away is unthinkable.

But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.

Mencheres has been alive for a very, VERY long time. After thousands of battles, the death of his wife and his visions of the future drying up, Mencheres doesn't feel like there is anything to live for. His people will be safe with the co-ruler of his line and now all he has to figure out is how to off himself.

Mencheres stumbles upon a small group of ghouls just before sunrise. In guise of looking for a lost vampire, Mencheres allows himself to be captured and ultimately, killed.

Kira is walking home and as she's passing a row of vacant warehouses, she hears someone being attacked in one of the buildings and called the police. Just as the group begins their torture, Kira enters with her gun trained on the attackers. She thinks she's saving someone but when this gravely wounded "man” breaks free of his restraints and destroys his attackers, Kira can't believe what she's seeing!

Not the best way to meet someone but little does Mencheres know that his and Kira's destinies are entwined. This is a wonderful book and we finally have the opportunity to get a peek inside the stoic vampire.
