Review: High Country Hideout by Elle James

Last hope or second chance?

Ranching was Angus Ketchum's first love -- until his last tour of duty shattered that dream. The wounded ex-soldier gets his second chance when he's recruited to go undercover to protect a widowed ranch owner. But from the moment he meets Reggie Davis, Angus can tell holding on to her land and keeping her young son safe is taking its toll. Especially when someone threatens her livelihood and her life. As the attacks escalate, Angus must rely on his combat skills to keep Reggie and her boy alive. And he must rely on his commitment to the mission to keep their powerful attraction in check.

HIGH COUNTRY HIDEOUT has the perfect mix of romance and intrigue.

Angus and Reggie each stole my heart in their own way. Angus is a soldier who lost his leg in an IED explosion and is trying to find his place. Signing on to be an agent for Covert Cowboys, Inc. has given him the chance to feel useful again and Reggie, her son Tad and the rest of Fool’s Fortune, Colorado have made him whole.

Reggie is an incredibly strong woman. She’s lost her husband the year before and is determined to work her ranch in order to pass it along to her son. That includes fighting off mining speculators and everyone else in the town that thinks she should sell it. Reggie is determined to do it on her own and is adamant that she doesn’t need the hunky cowboy recently hired to help her out.

Their relationship played out beautifully. The romance was hot and sensual and I loved how both bruised and battered souls found solace together in spite of the dangerous mystery surrounding the ranch.

This is my first read from the Covert Cowboys, Inc. series and can easily be read as a standalone. I really enjoyed the story and would recommend it to all romantic suspense fans.

I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own.
