Review: Hard To Be Good by Laura Kaye

Hard Ink Tattoo owner Jeremy Rixey has taken on his brother’s stateside fight against the forces that nearly killed Nick and his Special Forces team a year before. Now, Jeremy’s whole world has been turned upside down—not the least of which by a brilliant, quiet blond man who tempts Jeremy to settle down for the first time ever.

Recent kidnapping victim Charlie Merritt has always been better with computers than people, so when he’s drawn into the SF team’s investigation of his army colonel father’s corruption, he’s surprised to find acceptance and friendship—especially since his father never accepted who Charlie was. Even more surprising is the heated tension Charlie feels with sexy, tattooed Jeremy, Charlie’s opposite in almost every way.

With tragedy and chaos all around them, temptation flashes hot, and Jeremy and Charlie can’t help but wonder why they’re trying so hard to be good...

Laura Kaye shows her versatility in this novella; a true example of a love that knows no bounds.

Laura is one of my very favorite authors and I was so happy that she was true to her story and her characters and wrote this novella the way it was supposed to be written instead of curbing her artistic integrity. I can only imagine the pressure on any author to please readers. There is still a taboo around male/male romance and I applaud the author for her efforts in bringing this genre to the forefront. Love comes in all shapes, sizes, races, ethnicities and sexual orientations. Laura Kaye gives us a beautiful love story that requires courage, strength and acceptance in all forms.

I absolutely loved this story. Jer and Charlie are paired beautifully together despite Charlie’s need to keep his feelings for Jeremy a secret. Charlie has some past issues to deal with and with Jeremy’s help and the support of his sister and the rest of the gang at Hard Ink, he is truly able to overcome his fears in order to be the man he was born to be. And also knowing that it’s okay to love who he wants to love, regardless of what society—and his father—deems appropriate.

Their story is not only moving, it’s also HOT! Jeremy and Charlie have the sexiest first kiss I’ve ever read! The chemistry was explosive and their actual coupling was even hotter! The only negative comment I have is that their story was too short!

I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own.
